Knitwear shrinkage sounds like a care-label issue, but buyers usually feel it later, when the approved size chart starts drifting. A knitted polo that measured correctly in the sample room can come back shorter after wash. A sweater can keep the chest but lose sleeve length. Ribs can open up. The customer does not see "2.8% dimensional change". They see a garment that no longer fits like the product page said it would.
For private-label knitwear, the question is not "will it shrink?" Some movement is normal. The question is how much, where it happens, and whether the factory has already built that behavior into the sample and bulk measurements before production starts.
Why factories talk about size stability, not just shrinkage
In test reports, dimensional change can go in both directions. Body length may shrink while hem width relaxes. A collar can look fine on the table and still sit poorly after a wash. So a useful review looks at the whole garment: body length, chest, shoulder, sleeve, hem, collar, cuffs, rib recovery, twisting and seam shape.
This is where many sample approvals get loose. The buyer approves a good looking sample, but nobody confirms whether that sample is the pre wash spec or the after wash spec. If the size chart is meant to describe the garment the customer receives, the factory has to know which condition the measurements refer to.
What shrinkage rate actually tells you
Shrinkage rate is just the percentage difference before and after wash and dry.
Shrinkage rate = (after wash measurement - before wash measurement) / before wash measurement x 100%
If body length moves from 70 cm to 68.6 cm, the result is -2%. Many reports call that 2% shrinkage. A positive result means the garment grew.
Do not stop at one percentage for the whole sweater. A factory can say "about 3%" and still miss the problem that matters. Sleeve length, shoulder width, collar opening and hem width may all move differently. For a knitted polo or fine-gauge sweater, the report should show the measurement points that affect the fit your customer will notice.
Why knitwear moves after washing
Knitwear is made from loops. That makes it comfortable, but it also gives the garment room to relax. Yarn type, gauge, stitch density, panel tension, linking, washing, steaming and pressing all leave fingerprints on the final shape.
Cotton knits, merino blends, acrylic blends and cotton-nylon yarns will not behave the same way. A rib hem will not behave like a jersey body. A compact collar on a knitted polo needs a different check from a soft crewneck body. Even the same yarn can change if the stitch tension is too loose or if panels are pressed too hard before approval.
Most shrinkage problems are not one big mistake. They usually come from small choices stacked together: yarn, stitch, finishing, wash method and care label.
How a factory should check shrinkage before bulk
The cleanest time to deal with shrinkage is before bulk fabric or panels are locked. Waiting until final inspection is too late. By then the garment is already made.
A practical factory workflow is simple enough:
Confirm whether the size chart is pre wash, after wash, or both.
Test the yarn, fabric panel, or garment using the buyer's care method.
Record the actual movement by measurement point.
Adjust the knitting spec, pattern, or finishing route if the result is outside tolerance.
Keep the approved sample, wash method and measurement sheet together for bulk.
For formal lab testing, buyers may refer to AATCC TM135 for fabric dimensional change, AATCC TM150 for garment dimensional change, or ISO 6330 for domestic washing and drying procedures. In real orders, the most important thing is to agree on the method before sampling. A cold gentle wash with flat drying is not the same test as warm machine wash and tumble dry.
How the factory adjusts the sample
If a sweater needs to finish at 68 cm body length after wash, the pre wash body may need extra length. How much extra depends on the test result. If the garment shrinks around 2%, the pattern or knitting length can be adjusted before the buyer signs off.
The same logic applies to chest, sleeve, shoulder and hem. A good factory does not simply make everything bigger. It looks at where the garment moves and adjusts those points. Sometimes the answer is pattern allowance. Sometimes it is stitch tension. Sometimes it is washing or steaming.
For private-label knitwear, this step matters because the buyer often wants repeat orders. If the first bulk run is corrected by guesswork, the second order becomes hard to repeat.
Marker pens are a small detail that can ruin a clean knit
Knitwear also picks up small production problems easily. Marker pens are one of them.
Light colors, wool blends and fine-gauge surfaces can hold marks longer than expected. Some water-soluble pens disappear on one fabric and leave a shadow on another. Heat from pressing can set a mark instead of removing it.
The safer rule is boring but useful: test the marker on the real fabric first. Keep marks inside seam allowance when possible. Remove them before final pressing. Check the surface again during final QC, especially on light beige, white, grey and pastel colors.
Care instructions need to match the test
A factory can control the garment before shipment, but the customer's wash habit still matters. Knitwear that passed a flat dry test should not be sold with care wording that makes hanging or tumble drying sound safe.
Flat drying is usually the safer instruction for wool and many delicate knit styles. The customer should press out water with a towel, lay the garment flat, reshape the shoulders, sleeves, collar and hem, then let it dry away from strong heat or direct sun. Hanging a wet sweater can stretch it because the water adds weight.
If your brand needs machine washable knitwear, say that early. The factory can then choose yarn, stitch and finishing with that target in mind instead of trying to force a delicate construction into a care method it cannot support.
What to put in the knitwear tech pack
A tech pack does not need to be fancy, but it should remove the easy misunderstandings. For knitwear shrinkage rate and size stability, include:
- Product type: sweater, knitted polo, knit tee, cardigan or half zip.
- Yarn or fiber direction: cotton, merino, wool blend, cotton-modal, recycled yarn, acrylic blend or nylon blend.
- Gauge and stitch reference: jersey, rib, cable, links, jacquard, textured stitch, fine gauge or mid gauge.
- Measurement standard: pre wash, after wash, or both.
- Tolerance by point: body length, chest, sleeve, shoulder, hem, collar and cuffs.
- Care expectation: hand wash, machine wash, dry clean, dry flat or tumble dry.
- Reference garment or fit sample, especially if the hand feel is hard to describe.
- Branding details: neck label, care label, hangtag, packaging and logo placement.
- Target market and size range, because US, UK and EU fit expectations are not identical.
Before approving the sample
Before you approve a knitwear sample, ask for the boring proof. It saves money later.
Has the factory measured the garment before and after wash? Are the after wash measurements still inside tolerance? Does the care label match the test method? Do the ribs recover? Is the collar still clean? Are the shoulders and seams still sitting correctly? Has the factory recorded the yarn, gauge, stitch tension, wash method and finishing notes for bulk?
If nobody can answer those questions, the sample is not really ready for bulk production. It may look good in a photo, but the production risk is still sitting there.
