A bomber jacket is a waist-length jacket with a center-front zip and knitted rib at the collar, cuffs and hem. The rib is the defining feature, not a decoration: it closes the three openings and pulls the body into a blouson shape. Swap it for a straight hem and flat cuffs and you have a windbreaker wearing the same shell.
Most guides answer this question for a shopper. This one answers it for whoever has to write the spec sheet.

Four features, four separate specification decisions
Every description of a bomber lists the same four traits. On a tech pack, each one is a different decision with a different owner.
- Waist-length body. The hem sits at or just above the natural waist. The blouson volume above it is the difference between chest width and hem opening — a number you approve, not a mood.
- Center-front zip. Type, size, finish, slider, puller and whether it is open-end or two-way. A jacket that fastens badly is remembered for exactly that.
- Rib collar, cuffs and hem. A knitted trim with its own composition and stretch behavior. More on this below, because it earns it.
- Pockets. Slash or welt at the front, sometimes an inset sleeve pocket carried over from military patterns. Position, angle and depth are specified.
Scroll any "best bomber jackets" roundup and roughly half the entries turn out to be zip-front shells with a rib collar and a straight hem. The collar alone does not carry the silhouette.

Why it is called a bomber jacket, and what each version changed
The name comes from military aviation. Early aircraft had open cockpits, so pilots needed outerwear that held heat and did not catch on controls. Read as heritage it is charming; read as a specification history it is more useful, because each designation records one construction change.
- A-1 (1927). The first standardized US flight jacket, in leather, with a knit waistband and cuffs. Rib enters the garment here. It still closed with buttons.
- A-2 (1930s). Buttons replaced by a zip and a fold-down collar added. The recognizable modern outline arrives here.
- B-3. Heavy shearling for high-altitude bomber crews — the version that gave the category its name, and the one furthest from anything a lightweight program will make.
- B-15 (1940s). The shell moves off leather onto nylon or a cotton-rayon blend, with wool-knit cuffs and the sleeve pocket that survives to this day.
- MA-1 (around 1949–1950). Pressurized cabins removed the need for extreme insulation. The result was lightweight nylon, a knit collar in place of fur, and a reversible high-visibility lining.
Almost every modern bomber descends from the MA-1, not from the shearling jackets that named the category. When a brief says "bomber," confirm which ancestor it means before anyone orders fabric.

The rib is a separate component, and it fails separately
Style guides treat "ribbed cuffs and waistband" as a visual trait. In production, rib is a purchased knitted trim with its own specification, and it is where most bomber samples get their first round of comments.
Four fields decide how it behaves:
- Composition. Cotton, polyester, acrylic or a blend, almost always with elastane. This governs both hand feel and how the rib returns to shape.
- Structure and gauge. 1x1 and 2x2 rib look similar in a photo and behave differently on the body.
- Finished width and length. Cuff width, collar height and hem depth, plus the relaxed and extended measurements.
- Color. Matching or deliberate contrast — and if matching, this is the field to look at twice.
That last field is the quiet one. The shell is usually a woven synthetic; the rib is usually a knit, often in a different fiber. Two substrates take dye by two routes, so "the same navy" approved on small swatches can drift apart in bulk. Decide early whether the program needs a true match or a stated contrast, and approve the pairing on bulk materials, not on lab dips viewed separately.
Then there is recovery. Rib that stretches and does not come back leaves a hem that flares instead of gathering. It is one of the jacket inspection points in our custom lightweight jacket manufacturing category: uneven hem tension is checked by comparing relaxed shape, gathers and elastic recovery, and the hem opening is measured relaxed rather than stretched. Approve rib on a sewn sample after washing, in the bulk color, next to the bulk shell. A loose trim card proves the yarn exists. It does not prove the hem will hold.

Shell and lining: what a lightweight bomber is actually made of
Historically: leather, shearling and wool. For a modern lightweight program it is usually a synthetic woven, chosen for weight, surface and how it takes color. Among the shells we currently list for this category, technical nylon runs 100% nylon at 120 GSM for clean transitional jackets, Taslan gives a spun-like texture that cuts synthetic gloss, ripstop adds a reinforcing grid for packable styles, and pongee works as a lining or a light shell. Exact composition, weight, finish and color are confirmed against the mill specification, an approved swatch and the project tech pack — never against a category page.
Lining is a decision, not a default. Full lining hides seams and improves the wearing feel; partial lining saves weight and cost. Either way it has to be balanced with the shell, because a twisted lining is visible from the outside and is one of the standard jacket inspection points.
If the brief also includes a water-resistant finish, treat that as a separate specification with its own evidence — a finish is only a claim when a defined test sits behind it, as we set out in water resistant vs waterproof. What a factory needs before it can quote a bomber
There are three usable starting points: a jacket tech pack, a reference jacket, or detailed exterior, interior and detail images with measurements. All three work. None of them is complete on its own.
A reference garment is evidence, not a full instruction. It shows proportion, construction direction and hand feel; it does not say which features to copy and which were accidents of the original. A buyer once sent us a reference Oxford shirt with a small button at each collar point, and our first sample came back without them. The detail was visible the whole time. What was missing was a drawing callout, a bill-of-materials line and a checklist entry — recognition had been treated as control.
For a bomber, the fields that most often stay blank are:
- shell composition, weight and finish, or a swatch to match;
- rib composition, structure, finished dimensions and color relationship to the shell;
- zipper type, size, finish and puller;
- lining, full or partial, with color;
- pocket type, position and angle;
- labels, artwork and hardware;
- quantity by color and size.
Measurements follow the category schedule: chest straight across 2.5 cm below the armhole seam with the jacket fastened, shoulder between back shoulder points, body length from high shoulder point to hem, sleeve from shoulder join to cuff, hem opening measured relaxed, and pocket position from center, hem and seams. Once the details are confirmed, MOQ starts from 50 pieces per design, a first sample is usually planned for 7–10 days, and bulk is usually planned for 15–30 days after sample approval and material readiness. Rib color matching and special hardware can extend that — a good argument for settling them before the sampling clock starts.

What is the difference between a bomber jacket and a regular jacket?
The rib trim and the length. A bomber ends at the waist and closes its collar, cuffs and hem with knitted rib, which produces the blouson volume through the body. A generic jacket may be any length and usually finishes with self-fabric or elastic. If the hem is a straight woven band, it is not a bomber, whatever the collar looks like.
What is the purpose of a bomber jacket?
It was designed to hold body heat in a cold, cramped cockpit without restricting movement. The rib openings seal drafts at the neck, wrists and waist, and the short length keeps the garment clear of a seat and controls. In a modern range it does the civilian version of the same job: a light layer that traps warmth without adding bulk or length.
Why do they call it a bomber jacket?
The name comes from the crews of bomber aircraft, who needed heavier flight jackets than fighter pilots for long high-altitude missions — the shearling B-3 in particular. The label then spread backward across the whole family of knit-trimmed flight jackets, which is why a lightweight nylon MA-1 is called a bomber despite having almost nothing in common with a B-3.
Are flight jackets and bomber jackets the same?
Not quite. Flight jacket is the wider category — all military aviation outerwear, including leather A-2s and shearling jackets with no rib at all. Bomber is the subset with the knit collar, cuffs and waistband and a cropped body. In everyday use the words are swapped freely, so on a sourcing brief it is worth naming the specific reference rather than the category.
What's the difference between a bomber jacket and a leather jacket?
They answer different questions: bomber describes a silhouette, leather describes a material. A leather bomber is both. A biker jacket is leather but not a bomber — different length, asymmetric zip, no rib hem. When a brief says "leather bomber," confirm which half of the phrase is fixed, because the two lead to very different supply chains.
Is an aviator jacket a bomber jacket?
Usually it is a related but distinct style. Aviator normally means the shearling-lined, wide-collared type descended from the B-3, with leather straps rather than a rib waistband. Bombers in the modern sense are lighter, rib-trimmed and generally synthetic. Both sit inside the flight-jacket family; they are not interchangeable on a spec sheet.
If your bomber direction is still a reference photo and a rough quantity, that is a workable starting point. Send what you have, say which details are fixed and which are open, and the gaps can be closed before anyone cuts fabric.
