A menswear tech pack is the working specification that turns a design idea into a product a pattern maker, sample room, factory and quality team can interpret in the same way. A useful pack does more than show a sketch. It defines the garment, materials, measurements, construction, branding, testing and approval status clearly enough for a supplier to quote and sample without filling gaps by assumption.

For brands developing shirts, polos, overshirts, chinos, knitwear or lightweight jackets, clearer information usually means fewer clarification emails, more comparable quotations and a better first sample. This checklist explains what to include, what can wait until later, and how to control revisions.

What Is a Clothing Tech Pack?

A clothing tech pack is a controlled set of product specifications shared with suppliers. It normally combines technical drawings, a bill of materials (BOM), measurement specifications, construction notes, artwork, label and packaging instructions, and a revision history.

It is not the same as a mood board. A mood board communicates aesthetic direction; a tech pack communicates decisions that can be measured, sourced or checked. It is also not automatically a legal compliance file. Product requirements vary by target market, garment type and end use, so testing and labeling instructions should be reviewed for the countries where the product will be sold.

1. Start With Style Identification and Product Overview

Give every style a unique style number and a consistent name. Record the brand, season or drop, product category, intended wearer, fit description, target market, size range, sample size, colorways and document version. Add the date and the person responsible for approvals.

A short product summary helps the factory understand the commercial intent. For example: “men’s regular-fit long-sleeve overshirt in midweight cotton twill, designed for layering, with two chest patch pockets and garment-washed appearance.” This gives useful context without replacing measurable specifications.

2. Add Clear Technical Flats

Include clean front and back technical drawings. Add side or internal views when they reveal details that are not visible in the main flats. Use numbered callouts to connect each feature to a construction note.

  • Show seam lines, darts, pleats, yokes, pockets, plackets, cuffs, collars and closures.
  • Indicate topstitching rows and visible stitch placement.
  • Include enlarged detail views for complicated areas such as collar stands, zipper guards or pocket construction.
  • Separate design intent from decoration: artwork dimensions and placement should have their own specification.

A reference photo can support the drawing, but it should not be the only instruction. Photographs can hide proportions, seam types and internal construction.

3. Build a Complete Bill of Materials (BOM)

The BOM should list every material and component required to make and pack the garment. For each item, specify the part of the garment, material description, composition, construction, weight or gauge where relevant, color, finish, supplier or nominated quality, unit of measure and consumption if known.

Typical BOM lines include shell fabric, contrast fabric, lining, interlining, rib, pocketing, sewing thread, buttons, zippers, snaps, elastic, drawcords, labels, patches, hangtags, polybags and cartons. For knitwear, add yarn composition, yarn count, ply, gauge and stitch structure. For woven garments, describe fabric construction and weight rather than relying only on a trade name.

If a material is not yet nominated, mark it as “factory proposal required” and define the performance or appearance target. This is clearer than leaving the field blank.

4. Create a Point-of-Measure Specification

A measurement chart should state the sample size, all points of measure (POMs), how each point is measured, the target measurement and the allowed tolerance. Use a numbered measurement diagram so the pattern maker and QC inspector follow the same method.

  • Use one unit system consistently, or show an explicit conversion.
  • Define whether the garment is measured relaxed, stretched, buttoned, zipped, laid flat or after washing.
  • Separate body measurements from finished-garment measurements.
  • Record tolerances by POM; a collar, chest and body length may not need the same allowance.
  • Add grade rules only after the base-size fit and size architecture are understood.

A size chart without measuring instructions is open to interpretation. For trousers, “thigh” must state the distance below the crotch; for shirts, “chest” must state whether it is measured a fixed distance below the armhole.

5. Specify Construction and Workmanship

Construction notes translate the flats into sewing operations. Call out seam and stitch types, seam allowance, stitches per inch or centimetre where important, topstitch distance, reinforcement, edge finish, interlining placement, button attachment, zipper installation and pressing requirements.

Focus on details that affect appearance, durability, fit or cost. For a smart-casual shirt, this may include collar construction, collar-point shape, placket width, side-seam finish, sleeve-placket type, button spacing and hem shape. For chinos, specify waistband construction, fly, pocketing, belt-loop dimensions, bar tacks and crease or wash finish.

Do not write “high quality stitching” as a specification. Replace it with observable requirements and an approved sample reference.

6. Define Color, Artwork and Branding

Assign each colorway a unique name and color reference. Physical lab dips, strike-offs or approved swatches should carry an approval date and status. Screen colors alone are not dependable production standards.

For embroidery, print, transfer, patch or badge applications, provide the original vector artwork where possible. State finished dimensions, placement measurements from fixed garment points, color references, technique, backing or hand-feel requirements and an approval process.

Include label files and placement diagrams for the main label, size label, care label and any flag or brand label. State finished size, fold type, material, ground color, text color and attachment method.

7. Include Labeling and Target-Market Requirements

The selling market affects what information the product must carry. For the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s apparel-labeling guidance explains that most textile and wool products require fiber content, country of origin and the identity of the manufacturer or responsible marketer. The FTC’s Care Labeling Rule guidance also requires manufacturers and importers to provide supported care instructions for covered garments.

Accordingly, a production-ready tech pack should not use placeholder care symbols or unverified fiber claims. Add the target sales countries, required languages, legal label content, label position and the evidence used to support the care instruction. Ask a qualified compliance specialist or testing laboratory to confirm requirements for your exact product and market.

8. Add Fabric and Garment Performance Requirements

A fabric name and weight do not fully describe performance. Define the tests or acceptance criteria that matter to the product: dimensional stability after care, colorfastness, pilling, seam strength or slippage, spirality, abrasion, appearance after laundering and restricted substances where applicable.

ASTM International’s textile standards overview groups test methods and specifications for textile physical, mechanical and chemical properties. Its guide to textile care procedures identifies methods related to colorfastness, dimensional stability, ironing temperature and appearance retention. The relevant method and acceptance level should be chosen for the fabric, product and market—not copied blindly from another style.

For products entering the United States, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission explains that general wearing apparel is subject to the flammability standard in 16 CFR Part 1610, with specific exclusions and additional rules for some categories. Record applicable safety requirements and the party responsible for testing and certificates.

9. Detail Packaging and Carton Requirements

Packaging affects presentation, logistics, cost and compliance. State folding method, buttoning or fastening position, tissue or collar supports, individual polybag requirements, suffocation warnings where applicable, barcode format and placement, assortment ratio, carton dimensions or limits, carton marks and packing list requirements.

For an early quotation, exact carton dimensions may not be available. You can still state the intended retail presentation and ask the supplier to propose an efficient packing method for approval.

10. Control Samples, Comments and Revisions

A tech pack becomes more valuable when it records decisions. Use a dated revision table with version number, change description, author and approval status. Never overwrite a measurement or construction change without showing what was revised.

When you are ready to authorize one development step, use a garment sample request form to identify the governing tech-pack version, sample purpose, open items, timing and approver without duplicating the full specification.

After each prototype, fit sample, size set, pre-production sample or shipment sample, issue consolidated comments against the current version. Mark each point as approved, revise and resubmit, or pending. Reference photos should identify the sample, date and measurement condition.

The approved pre-production pack and approved sample should become the production reference. If a late change affects fabric, trims, measurements, artwork, packaging or test requirements, confirm its effect on price and delivery before release.

What to Send for an Initial Factory Quotation

You do not need every final detail before asking whether a project is feasible. For a more useful initial quote, send at least:

  • Product category and clear reference images or technical flats.
  • Target quantity by style or color.
  • Fabric composition, approximate weight and finish direction.
  • Size range and base-size measurements.
  • Key construction and branding details.
  • Target market, required testing and labeling expectations.
  • Desired sample date and delivery window.

The factory can then identify missing decisions, suggest suitable materials and clarify which figures are estimates. Final bulk pricing should be based on approved specifications, confirmed materials, quantities and packaging.

  • Using inspiration photos without measurable callouts.
  • Leaving the BOM incomplete or mixing approved and proposed materials.
  • Providing measurements without POM diagrams or tolerances.
  • Using inconsistent units, color names or style numbers.
  • Copying care instructions and test requirements from an unrelated garment.
  • Sending comments across multiple chats without issuing a revised master file.

Final Tech Pack Checklist

Before releasing a style for sampling, confirm that the pack contains style identification, technical flats, a complete BOM, colorways, measurement methods and tolerances, construction notes, artwork, labels, packaging, target-market requirements, test expectations and revision control. Highlight every item that is still “to be confirmed” and assign an owner and deadline.

A strong tech pack does not need to be visually elaborate. It needs to be unambiguous, version-controlled and connected to physical approvals.
