Pima is a cotton variety, not a quality grade. Its fiber is longer than ordinary upland cotton, which lets a mill spin a finer, stronger, smoother yarn — and that is where the difference you can feel comes from. What the word does not do is guarantee anything on its own. Printed on a garment label, "pima" carries no automatic standard behind it.
That gap between a real fiber property and a loosely used word is the whole sourcing problem. Below: what pima is defined as, what longer staple changes at the yarn and fabric stage, and what to write into a specification so the claim survives from quotation to bulk label.

What pima cotton actually is
Pima belongs to Gossypium barbadense, a different species from the Gossypium hirsutum that produces most of the world's cotton. The commercially useful consequence is fiber length, usually called staple length.
The US definition is specific. When the Agricultural Marketing Service established the current official grade standards, it described American Pima as extra long staple cotton of 1 1/4 to 1 9/16 inches from the botanical group Gossypium barbadense, and noted that it accounts for only 3 to 5 percent of the total US cotton crop each year (Federal Register, 65 FR 36598). The official staple representations held by the USDA for American Pima are 1 5/16, 1 3/8, 1 7/16 and 1 1/2 inches (7 CFR 28.304).
For comparison, the official staple table for American Upland runs in thirty-second-inch steps and centers on the 1 1/8 inch region for most of the crop. So the honest version of the headline is not "twice as long". It is closer to a quarter to a third longer, consistently — enough to change what a spinning mill can do, and not enough to justify every claim made in its name.
Three numbers describe the fiber before anyone sees a garment: staple length, strength and micronaire, the fineness-and-maturity measure. A mill quotes all three. A brand usually hears only the first, and often only as an adjective.

Where it grows, and why buyers ask about origin
Extra-long staple cotton needs long, hot, dry seasons and reliable irrigation, so it grows in a short list of places: the American Southwest, coastal Peru, Australia, Egypt, and parts of India and China. Egyptian cotton is the same species — a place, not a competing fiber.
Origin matters commercially because it changes price, it changes lead time, and it is the only part of the story that leaves a paper trail. A bale has a classing record. A finished polo does not.
So origin is a useful proxy and a poor proof. "Peruvian pima" on a purchase order describes an intention; whether the yarn in your bulk fabric matched it is a separate question, and much cheaper to ask before cutting than after.
Longer staple pays off in the yarn, not in the word
Here is the mechanism, because it is what you are actually buying.
A spun yarn is a bundle of overlapping fibers held by twist. Longer fibers mean fewer fiber ends in any given length of yarn, so fewer of them work loose to the surface. That is why extra-long staple yarn tends to feel smoother, look cleaner after washing and pill less. Longer fibers also grip each other over more surface, so the same count can be spun with less twist and still hold together — a softer hand at equal strength, or a finer count at equal durability.
The benefit is real and it lives at the yarn stage. Which means the specification field that carries it is not the word "pima". It is the yarn.
Ask for four things:
- Yarn count in Ne, with ply — 30/1, 40/2 and 60/2 are different products at different prices.
- Combed or carded. Extra-long staple that was never combed has given away part of what it was bought for.
- Fiber content by weight, including blends. Elastane at 5 percent changes recovery, dyeing and cost.
- Mercerized or not, if you want the luster people associate with the fiber.
A mill can quote all four in a sentence. "Soft premium pima" is not quotable, and a factory that says yes to it is guessing on your behalf.

What the fabric then does with that yarn
Good yarn can still be spent badly. The knit or weave decides how much of the advantage reaches the wearer. Two garments can use identical 40/2 combed extra-long staple yarn and behave nothing alike, because one is a 180 gsm single jersey and the other a 240 gsm pique at a different gauge and stitch density. The bale is classified. The label is not.
This is the part the buying guides skip.
USDA classing is real and rigorous, and it stops at the bale. For American Pima it produces a color grade and, separately, a leaf grade — color grades 1 through 7 under 7 CFR 28.501 to 28.507, leaf grades under 7 CFR 28.511 onward. So when someone asks what the highest grade of cotton is, the regulated answer is a two-part classing result on a bale of lint, not a tier on a hangtag.
Downstream of that bale, the word travels without its paperwork. Supima, which owns the trademark for American-grown extra-long staple cotton, says so in its own FAQ: at retail, "Pima is a generic term for 'better' cotton" that does not necessarily mean extra-long staple was used, and only a licensed supply chain may carry the Supima mark (Supima FAQ). When the trademark holder tells you the adjacent generic word is unreliable, take it at face value.
We learned the general version of this lesson the expensive way on a different product. A buyer sent a reference Oxford shirt with a button-down collar, each point secured by a small button. Our first sample came back without them. The reference showed the detail clearly; our process never turned it into a drawing callout, a bill-of-materials line and a checklist item. The corrective sample restored the construction, and the lasting change was to extract unfamiliar details from a reference before pattern work rather than after.
The failure was not difficulty. It was treating recognition as control. A fiber name in an email thread is recognition. A composition line, a yarn count and a document somebody signed is control.

How to write pima into a specification
Replace the adjective with fields. These change a quotation.

The last row is the one brands forget. Decide at quotation time what proof you need — proof requested after cutting is a negotiation, not a control.

What your label is allowed to say
If you sell into the United States, the fiber claim is regulated even though the word "pima" is not.
Under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act rules, a label must disclose generic fiber names and percentages by weight for every fiber present at 5 percent or more, in order of predominance (16 CFR 303.16). The generic name is "cotton". "Pima" is a varietal descriptor sitting on top of it, and a fiber trademark or generic name may not be used in a way that is false or deceptive as to fiber content (16 CFR 303.41).
There is also a practical instrument most brands never ask for. The same rules set out the form of a separate guaranty a supplier can give — a signed statement on or with an invoice that the goods are not misbranded or falsely advertised under the Act (16 CFR 303.36). If your name is going on a garment that claims a premium fiber, that guaranty and a fiber-content test report are the two documents worth having in the file. What this changes in a real menswear program
At Cynida, fabric sourcing and craftsmanship is the third stage of our development workflow, where composition, weight, hand feel, performance, color and cost get compared against each other rather than one at a time. An extra-long staple program usually moves three things at once.
Minimums. Our starting point is from 50 pieces per design, and the final minimum depends on the fabric, color split, trims, construction and branding you choose. A specialty yarn narrows the field of mills willing to run a small lot, so an unusual count or custom color can move the practical minimum even when the headline number has not.
Timing. A first sample is usually planned for 7 to 10 days once style, fabric direction, measurements and key construction details are confirmed, and bulk for 15 to 30 days after sample approval and material readiness. "Material readiness" carries more weight on a specialty yarn than on a stock fabric, because that step waits on a mill rather than on us.
Where the money goes. Paying for extra-long staple yarn and then specifying a construction, finish or weight that hides it is common and avoidable. If the budget supports the upgrade in only one place, put it where the garment is touched.
For a first program, sample one honest extra-long staple quality against one good standard combed cotton in the same construction and weight, then decide with both in hand. Fabric has no interest in the adjective on the purchase order.
