A linen shirt specification works when every claim about the fabric carries a condition. Write the composition, the weave, the mass per unit area with a tolerance, the finish, the dimensional-change limit against a named wash procedure, and the points of measure that limit applies to. Then decide, before sampling, whether the fit absorbs the shrinkage or the fabric does.

That is the whole answer. Everything below explains why each field exists and what happens when it is left blank.

Linen is honest in a way that makes brands nervous. It creases, it relaxes, it changes after the first wash, and it shows its own yarn irregularity on the surface. None of that is a defect. It becomes a defect only when the specification promised something else, or promised nothing at all and left the sample room to guess.

Write These Fabric Fields Before You Ask for a Quotation

Two linen shirt quotations are not comparable until the fabric behind them is described the same way. This is the minimum set of fields that makes a linen quotation mean something.

Mass per unit area deserves a method reference rather than a bare number. ISO 3801:1977 covers determination of mass per unit length and mass per unit area for woven fabrics, and asking the mill for its measured value on the specific quality is more useful than repeating a range you read somewhere. Ranges published by fabric sellers describe their catalog, not your shirt.

100% Linen or a Linen Blend: What Each Choice Actually Changes

The short answer: 100% linen when the crease is part of the product, a blend when the crease is a complaint.

When 100% linen is the right answer

Choose it when the garment's appeal is the fiber itself — the dry hand, the cooling feel, the way the shirt looks lived-in after an hour. A resort shirt, a relaxed camp-collar style and a premium warm-weather program all survive creasing because the customer expects it. Pure linen also gives you the clearest labeling story, which matters if origin or fiber content is part of your marketing.

When a blend is the right answer

Choose a blend when the shirt has to look composed at the end of the day: travel programs, uniforms, hospitality, or a smart-casual shirt worn under a jacket. Cotton adds softness and reduces the sharpness of the crease. Viscose or rayon adds drape and cool touch. A small amount of elastane changes the sewing and pressing behavior more than its percentage suggests.

What a blend does not do is remove the need to specify. A 55/45 linen-cotton shirting from two mills can behave quite differently depending on yarn count, weave and finish. The percentage narrows the field; it does not settle the result.

The blend percentage is also a labeling decision

Blend ratios have a legal consequence, not just a hand-feel consequence, and that is covered further down. The short version: a small decorative amount of linen does not entitle you to sell the shirt as a linen shirt, and the disclosure threshold is written into the rules.

Weight, Weave and Slub: Turning "Nice Linen" Into a Cutting Plan

Linen shirting varies more within a single description than most cotton shirting does. Three fields do most of the work.

Mass per unit area. State a target and a tolerance, not a single number. Fabric is woven, relaxed, finished and rolled; a specification that allows no variation will be argued about at inspection instead of being met.

Weave and yarn character. Plain weave with an even yarn looks closer to cotton shirting. A slub or irregular yarn looks unmistakably like linen. Both are correct; only one of them matches your product photography. Approve a physical swatch of the actual quality rather than a description, because "textured" is not a shared unit of measurement.

Opacity. This is a separate question from weight. A light open weave in white or ivory can be more transparent than its weight suggests, and a customer discovering that on a hot day is a return, not a design feature. Check opacity on the approved swatch in daylight, and record the decision.

Ask for the mill's own spec sheet for the exact quality: composition, mass per unit area with method, yarn counts, ends and picks, finish and width. If the mill cannot produce one, you are specifying a fabric that nobody has measured.

Width matters more on linen than brands expect, because it drives fabric consumption and therefore cost per shirt. A pattern laid for one width does not automatically nest efficiently on another.

Control Wrinkling With Finish and Construction, Not Adjectives

"Should not wrinkle" is not a specification. Linen wrinkles; flax fiber has low elastic recovery, which is exactly why the fabric feels cool and dry rather than springy. What you can control is how sharply it creases, how much of that recovers by itself, and how the shirt looks after pressing.

Name the finish, then the expectation

Finish is where most of the perceived quality lives:

  • Enzyme wash removes surface harshness and gives a softer, slightly relaxed look. It also usually pre-relaxes the fabric, which changes your shrinkage numbers.
  • Garment wash applies the treatment after sewing, which softens the whole shirt but can shift measurements and stress seams.
  • Softener changes hand feel immediately, and can change it again after the customer's first wash.
  • Calendering or pressing finishes flatten the surface and raise the sheen. On linen this can read as either refined or synthetic, depending on how far it goes.

Each of these is a different product. Pick one, write it on the spec, and approve it on a sample — not on a swatch of a different quality that happened to be in the drawer.

If wrinkle behavior is a selling point, measure it

If the program's promise depends on crease recovery, use a test method rather than a discussion. AATCC TM128, the appearance method for wrinkle recovery of fabrics, induces uniform wrinkling and grades the result against replicas, and AATCC states it is technically equivalent to ISO 9867. Setting an acceptable grade turns "less wrinkly" into something a lab can confirm and a supplier can be held to. Setting no grade turns it into an argument after shipment.

Where the shirt creases first

Construction decides where creases concentrate. Front placket, collar band, cuff and the seat of the sleeve at the elbow take the most stress. Interlining choice at the collar and cuff will change how the shirt looks after four hours far more than a fabric adjective will. Specify interlining by supplier reference and approve it on the sample, then keep that reference for reorders.

Specify Shrinkage as a Test Condition, Not a Percentage

A percentage without a method is weak evidence. "About 3%" does not say whether that was warp or weft, whether the specimen was fabric or a finished garment, what temperature it was washed at, how it was dried, or where it was measured. Two suppliers can both report 3% and deliver shirts that fit differently.

Marking, washing and calculating

There is an established chain of standards for this, and naming them costs you one line in the tech pack:

  • ISO 3759:2011 covers preparation, marking and measuring of fabric specimens and garments in tests for dimensional change. This is the part brands most often skip, and it is the reason two labs disagree.
  • ISO 6330:2021 specifies the domestic washing and drying procedures used for textile testing, including reference machines, reference detergents and six drying procedures such as line dry, flat dry and tumble dry.
  • ISO 5077:2007 specifies how the dimensional change is determined once the specimen has been through that procedure.

Choose the wash procedure and drying method that matches the care instruction you intend to print. Testing to a gentle cold cycle and printing a warm machine wash is a specification that contradicts itself.

Warp and weft move differently

Record separate limits for warp and weft. Length and width rarely change by the same amount, and on a shirt that difference shows up as a body length that is now short while the chest is unchanged, or a sleeve that reads tight through the bicep. Decide who absorbs the change

Once you know the numbers, someone has to absorb them. There are three routes, and you should pick one deliberately:

  1. Pre-shrink the fabric or garment, then cut to finished measurements. Predictable, and usually the cleanest for repeat programs.
  2. Add the allowance into the pattern, cutting oversize so the shirt lands on spec after washing. This requires the shrinkage figure to be reliable and stable between lots.
  3. Accept the change in the size chart and publish measurements that describe the shirt as the customer will receive it after washing.

Whichever route you choose, write down whether the point-of-measure table is before wash or after wash. A measurement sheet without that line has caused more disputes than any single tolerance value.

Hand Feel Is a Sample Decision, Not a Word

"Soft", "crisp", "dry" and "premium" all survive translation badly. Hand feel is the one field that cannot be fully written down, so handle it the way experienced developers do: send or approve a physical reference, and describe what you want relative to it.

Useful comparative language sounds like this: softer than the reference but with the same body; the same softness with less sheen; drier hand, less cling. That gives the sourcing team a direction. "Premium hand feel" gives them a mood.

One practical warning. Hand feel after finishing and hand feel after the customer's first wash are two different states, and linen usually moves toward softer. If your product promise is about the softness a customer feels in month three, approve a washed sample, not only the factory-fresh one.

This is also the point where Cynida's own linen program is deliberately unfinished on paper. The published record for our ivory textured linen-blend shirt program lists the fabric as a linen blend with the exact composition confirmed during sourcing, the construction as textured woven shirting, and the finish as custom development. Weight is not fixed on the page either. That is not vagueness for its own sake: the record states that final fiber composition, fabric weight, hand feel, shrinkage target, fit, trims, labels, color standard and packaging are confirmed through sampling before bulk production, and it names the checks in advance — seam puckering, collar balance, placket alignment, shade consistency and measurement tolerance.

The lesson we would take from our own page is the order of operations. Name the checks early, commit the numbers when a real sample exists, and never let a marketing description harden into a production value nobody measured.

Fiber Content and Origin Claims: What You May Legally Print

This section is where linen programs quietly create risk, because the fabric conversation and the label conversation usually happen in different meetings. Compliance for your market is your own responsibility and this is not legal advice, but the primary sources are short and worth reading once.

United States fiber content

Under the Rules and Regulations Under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, 16 CFR 303.5(a) names "linen" among the generic names to be used for fibers present at 5% or more of total fiber weight. The FTC's business guidance on labeling under the Textile and Wool Acts explains the practical consequence: in general you may name only fibers making up 5% or more of the fiber weight, and fibers below 5% should be disclosed as "other fiber" rather than by their generic name — unless the fiber has a definite functional significance at that amount.

So a shirt with a decorative 3% of linen is not a linen shirt on the label. Decide that before the marketing copy is written, not after.

European Union fibre names

In the EU, Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 on textile fibre names lists, at Annex I item 7, "flax (or linen)" as the fibre obtained from the bast of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum. The same regulation also carries a specific naming allowance that surprises people: a product with a pure cotton warp and a pure flax weft, where flax is at least 40% of the total weight of the unsized fabric, may be given the name "cotton linen union", accompanied by the composition specification "pure cotton warp — pure flax (or linen) weft".

If you are selling into both markets, align the fiber statement once and reuse it, rather than letting two suppliers print two versions.

European origin claims changed name

If your program leans on European flax origin, use the current name. The Alliance for European Flax-Linen and Hemp states on its own site that the European Flax™ certification of origin and traceability, created in 2012, has become Masters of FLAX FIBRE™, with a new agricultural standard replacing the 2012 collective charter and audited by Bureau Veritas Certification from 2026. The Alliance also states the certification guarantees traceability for products containing a minimum of 50% linen of certified European origin, and that Masters of LINEN™ additionally requires the cultivation and processing steps to be carried out by European companies.

Two practical points follow. First, a certificate belongs to a specific certified company and product chain — it is not something a brand inherits by buying European fabric once. Second, several published linen guides still refer to the older name, so check the certificate itself and its scope rather than a blog. For clarity, the Alliance notes that "flax" refers to the plant and fibre while "linen" refers to the textile.

Where a program needs certified origin, that has to be sourced and documented at the mill level, and the certificate scope has to be checked against the actual fabric you are buying — the same discipline we apply to any certification or test document.

The Sample Gates That Catch Linen Problems Early

Final inspection cannot recover a feature that was never defined. On linen, four things are worth checking with real attention before bulk cutting.

Seam pucker. Linen shows puckering more readily than most cotton shirting, especially on long straight seams like the side seam and the front placket edge. Thread type, tension, stitch density and pressing all contribute. Look at the sample after washing, not only as sewn.

Collar and placket behavior. A collar that sits well on a fresh sample can roll differently once the fabric relaxes. Check collar balance and placket alignment on a washed sample, and keep the interlining reference locked for reorders.

Shade consistency. Undyed, piece-dyed and yarn-dyed linens all move between lots. Approve a physical shade standard, state a tolerance, and require lot-to-lot comparison rather than trusting a single approval swatch through a whole season.

Points of measure and tolerance. State the base size, the graded range, each point of measure, how it is measured, the tolerance, and whether the value is before or after wash. What a reference garment cannot tell the factory

We learned this on a woven shirt, and it was our own mistake. A buyer supplied a reference Oxford shirt with a button-down collar, each collar point secured by a small button. Our first sample came back without them. The reference garment showed the detail plainly; our process had simply not turned recognition into an unmistakable drawing callout, a bill-of-materials line and a feature on the checklist. The corrective sample restored the button-down construction, and the lasting change was procedural: extract unfamiliar details from a reference garment before pattern work, then close each one with a photo, measurement, material approval or written comment. Two buttons were never the technical challenge. A visible feature escaped because recognizing it had been treated as controlling it. On linen the equivalent risk is subtler, because the things you notice on a reference garment — the softness, the drape, the way it creases — are exactly the things that came from a finish nobody wrote down.

What Cynida Needs to Quote a Linen Shirt Program

  • MOQ starts from 50 pieces per design. The final minimum depends on the selected fabric, color split, trims, construction and branding requirements.
  • A first sample is usually planned for 7–10 days after style, fabric direction, measurements and key construction details are confirmed.
  • Bulk production is usually planned for 15–30 days after sample approval and material readiness. Quantity, complexity and packing can change the timing.

To reply with something more useful than a generic number, we need the target market and season, quantity by design, color and size, your composition and weight direction, the finish you want, the wash and care method you intend to print, the fit and size chart, collar and placket details, label and origin-claim wording, and the deadline.

If several of those are still open, send what exists. Identifying the open decisions is part of the work, and a partial brief reviewed early is cheaper than a confident brief corrected late.

Which linen fabric is best for shirts?

There is no single best; there is a best fit for a defined product. A plain weave with an even yarn reads closest to conventional shirting and photographs cleanly. Decide the end use, the season, the wrinkle expectation and the care instruction first, then let those narrow the fabric.
