A useful tech pack example is not simply a PDF containing flats, a BOM and a size chart. It is a connected control system: every important feature has a material, measurement or construction rule, an owner and an approval status. Use the annotated overshirt example below to decide whether your document is ready for a first sample.
This article uses a teaching style called OS-2401: a men's regular-fit overshirt in cotton twill with a button front, two chest pockets, a back yoke and adjustable cuffs. The style number and specifications are illustrative, not a customer record or a universal fit recommendation. The point is to show how the fields work together.

How to Read This Tech Pack Example
First, give every field a visible status. A blank cell asks the factory to guess whether the information is missing, unchanged or open for proposal. Use a simple status system throughout the pack:

The useful question is not, “Does this pack have a BOM page?” It is, “Can we trace each important feature from the drawing to the material, method, measurement and approval record?” A polished page can still contain an uncontrolled detail. Spreadsheets are very good at looking certain.
Page 1: Make the Cover Sheet a Control Page
The cover sheet identifies the product and the exact document being reviewed. It should stop an old file, wrong sample size or unnamed colorway from entering the next handoff.

Repeat the style number, version and date in the header or footer of every page. A filename such as OS-2401_V1.2_2026-08-02.pdf is more useful than overshirt_final_really-final.pdf, a title that has already lived a full and dangerous life.
Pages 2–3: Make the Flats and Callouts Agree
Show the front and back of the garment, plus internal or enlarged views when the main flats cannot reveal a detail. Number the callouts and connect each number to a written requirement.
For OS-2401, the front flat might show:

Do not write “as reference” beside a photograph and assume the visible details have become instructions. The drawing should show what remains, what changes and what the factory must reproduce. Internal construction, pocket bags, interlining and hidden labels may need separate views because a front flat cannot report what it cannot see.
Then cross-check the callout list against the rest of the pack. If callout 04 shows two cuff buttons, the BOM needs the correct button quantity and specification. The construction page needs the attachment and spacing method. The sample comments need a check for function and appearance. One feature, several linked controls.
Page 4: Turn the BOM Into Sourcing Decisions
A bill of materials should describe every material and trim used to make, brand and pack the garment. The exact fields vary by product, but a useful BOM identifies the part, specification, color, source or proposal status, unit and approval reference.

“Soft cotton” is a direction, not a controlled fabric specification. Composition, construction, weight and finish help a factory search. A dated swatch or approved material reference closes the decision. When a material is genuinely open, write Factory proposal required and define what the proposal must achieve rather than filling the cell with confidence-shaped fog.
Check BOM quantities against the drawings. Two cuffs with two usable buttons each may require four attached cuff buttons, plus any approved spare-button requirement. The front placket count must match the flat and placement plan. Label and packaging components belong in the same control system even when they are approved later.

Page 5: Define Each Point of Measure and Its Condition
A measurement table needs more than a point name and a number. It should state the sample size, unit, measuring method, garment condition, target and tolerance. Use a numbered diagram so the pattern maker, buyer and quality team measure the same line.
The values below only demonstrate the document structure. They are not Cynida's standard overshirt measurements or suggested tolerances.

State whether the garment is measured relaxed or stretched, open or fastened, before or after the approved care method. If a washed-garment result matters, keep the before-care and after-care records distinct. A percentage without the specimen condition and measuring method is weak evidence.
Do not grade the full size range by copying one increment into every POM. First approve the base-size fit and the size architecture. Then record the grade rule or finished measurement for each size, with any product-specific checks for pocket placement, collar proportion, sleeve pitch or hem balance.

Pages 6–8: Connect Construction, Branding and Packing to the Pattern
Construction notes translate the flats into operations the pattern and sample teams can follow. For the example overshirt, resolve seam type, seam allowance, topstitch distance, reinforcement, interlining placement, button attachment and pressing direction where each one affects appearance, fit, durability or cost.

Branding needs its own artwork version, finished dimensions, color reference, application method and placement from stable garment points. Packing needs the fold direction, fastening state, individual bag, barcode or sticker position, size assortment and carton-mark requirements that are known at that stage. Mark later decisions as pending; do not let them hide in a chat thread.
The pattern maker should be able to trace every shape-changing note to a drawing or measurement. The sample room should be able to trace every material and trim to the BOM. The buyer should be able to trace every approval to a dated record. That is how separate pages become one production instruction.
The Two Missing Buttons: What a Cross-Field Failure Looks Like
In a published Cynida Oxford shirt development case, the buyer's reference garment had a small button securing each collar point. Cynida's first sample omitted both buttons. The error was ours.
The feature was visible on the reference, but it had not been translated into an unmistakable drawing callout, BOM line and feature checklist. The corrective sample restored the button-down construction. The lasting lesson was not “look harder.” It was to extract each unfamiliar feature before pattern work and close it with a photo, measurement, material approval or written comment.
Use the same cross-field audit on your example:

Quality control starts here, not only at the final inspection table. Final inspection cannot recover a feature that was never defined.
What Must Be Closed Before the First Sample?
A partial pack, reference garment or clear image can begin a feasibility discussion. Before first-sample work starts, however, the factory normally needs enough confirmed information to build one intentional version:
- Current style number, document version and responsible contacts.
- Front, back and required detail views with numbered callouts.
- Base size, key measurements and measuring methods.
- Fabric direction and the status of every important material and trim.
- Construction decisions that change pattern, appearance or price.
- Artwork or branding requirements needed on the sample.
- Target market, quantity direction and required timing.
- A named owner and due date for every open field.

To release this exact version to the sample room, summarize its governing files, sample purpose, open decisions and approver in a garment sample request form. The request is the control page; the tech pack remains the detailed product source.
Before bulk, close the final BOM, measurements and tolerances, approved materials, artwork, workmanship, care or testing requirements, packaging, sample comments and current document version. If your pack is still a mix of confirmed and open information, that is not automatically a reason to delay the conversation. It is a reason to label the status clearly. A Final Pre-Sample Audit
Before sending the file, check that:
- The filename, cover sheet and every page show the same style and version.
- Every important visible feature has a drawing callout.
- Every material, trim, label and packing component appears in the BOM.
- BOM status is explicit: confirmed, proposal required, TBC or not applicable.
- Every POM has a diagram, method, unit, target and product-specific tolerance.
- Construction notes agree with the flats, BOM and measurement pages.
- Colorways connect fabric, thread, buttons, artwork and labels correctly.
- The sample checklist names the high-risk visual and functional details.
- Comments from earlier rounds are consolidated into the current master file.
- Each remaining open item has an owner and a deadline.
The pack does not need ornamental complexity. It needs one controlled answer wherever the factory must make one garment decision.
