Production pattern making is the controlled translation of a design into pieces that can be cut, sewn, measured and repeated. For a clothing brand, the safest sequence is simple: define the fit, build and approve one base-size pattern, lock the material and construction, grade the approved shape into the size range, then check representative graded sizes before bulk.
Reverse that order and grading does not repair the base fit. It distributes the same problem across more sizes.
This guide explains what a factory needs at each release point. It is written for brands developing shirts, polos, knitwear, chinos and light jackets—not for someone deciding which tracing paper or pattern-making software to buy. The tools matter to the pattern maker. The approvals matter to the buyer.

Start With the Fit Brief, Not a Blank Pattern
A sketch shows style direction. It rarely tells a pattern maker whose body the garment should fit, how much ease it needs or which proportions must remain stable across sizes. Those decisions belong in a fit brief before drafting begins.
At minimum, confirm:
- Target wearer and market: the body data or established brand block behind the range, not only a label such as M or 32.
- Fit direction: slim, regular, relaxed or oversized, supported by garment measurements or an approved reference.
- Base size and full range: the size used for development and every size planned for production.
- Points of measurement (POMs): chest, shoulder, body length, sleeve, rise, thigh or other category-specific points, with a written measuring method.
- Measurement condition: garment flat or relaxed, fastened or open, and before or after the approved wash process.
- Fabric and construction direction: composition, structure, stretch or recovery, seam type, lining or interlining, and intended finishing.
- Reference instructions: which proportions to retain, which details to change and which features are only inspiration.
Body measurements and garment measurements are related but not interchangeable. ISO 8559-1 defines principles for anthropometric body measurement; a garment POM sheet describes the finished product, including ease and design. A 100 cm body chest and a 100 cm garment chest are therefore not two versions of the same answer.
A ruler is excellent at reading what exists. It is less gifted at deciding what the fit should be. If the buyer does not yet have every answer, mark fields as factory proposal required and approve the proposal before pattern work proceeds. Build One Base-Size Production Pattern
The base-size pattern is the first complete two-dimensional definition of the garment. A pattern maker may adapt an existing block, draft from measurements, drape a shape and transfer it to paper, or work directly in CAD. The method is secondary to the result: cuttable pieces that reproduce the intended silhouette and construction in one development size.
A production-ready pattern normally carries more than an outline. Depending on the garment, it identifies:
- piece name, style number, base size and current version;
- grainline, cut quantity and whether a piece is mirrored or cut on fold;
- seam and hem allowances;
- notches that align panels, sleeves, collars, waistbands and pockets;
- drill points or placement references for darts, pockets, buttons and artwork;
- fusing, lining or reinforcement areas; and
- construction-dependent shaping such as sleeve cap, armhole, collar stand, rise and crotch curve.
That last group is why a measurement chart cannot replace a pattern. Two shirt fronts can share the same chest width and length but have different armhole curves and shoulder slopes. Two chinos can pass waist, inseam and hem measurements while differing at the front rise, back rise and crotch shape. The working artifacts should move through clear states:

Fit and Approve the Base Size Before Grading
The base size is the anchor for the range, so it should be chosen deliberately. Many brands use a central or commercially important size, but there is no universal choice. It must correspond to the target customer data, fit model or approved brand block used for development.
Cut the first sample in the intended fabric when possible, or in a clearly documented substitute with comparable weight, stretch and behavior. Then review three types of evidence together:
- Measurements: check the approved POMs using the stated method and garment condition.
- Fit and balance: review shoulder position, sleeve pitch, collar behavior, side-seam balance, rise, seat, mobility and silhouette as relevant to the style.
- Construction and features: confirm seams, openings, pockets, plackets, trims and reinforcement because some corrections change pattern geometry.
Comments should name the issue, location, viewing condition and desired result. “Make the sleeve better” leaves the pattern maker with a mood, not an instruction. “On the fastened sample, the right sleeve twists forward when the arm hangs naturally; review sleeve pitch and armhole balance” gives the team something observable to diagnose. Add a photograph, POM result or pinned sample mark where it improves clarity.
The pattern maker then updates the pattern and the measurement sheet together. If a change moves the armhole, the related sleeve cap must be reviewed; if a chino thigh is reduced, the knee and seat transition may need checking. Pattern pieces work as a system.
Cynida's first samples typically take 7–10 days after style, fabric, measurements and construction are confirmed. That timing starts after the inputs are ready. Sample approval should record the pattern version, spec version, material reference, wash condition and remaining open points. A filename such as FINAL_pattern_v7_really-final.dxf is memorable, but it is not version control.

Grade the Fit Logic, Not Every Point Equally
Pattern grading takes the approved base pattern into smaller and larger sizes. The Fashion Institute of Technology's grading guide describes the same basic transition: an initial sample pattern becomes the range of patterns needed for production.
The important word is approved. Grading preserves a fit concept; it does not invent a sound one.
A grade rule can be expressed through changes between garment POMs, through horizontal and vertical movement at pattern points, or through both. The graded measurement sheet and graded pattern must reconcile, but they are not identical documents. A chest increment describes an output measurement. It does not, by itself, tell the pattern maker how to distribute that change across the side seam, armhole, shoulder and front or back shape.
Different areas therefore need different logic:

There is no single “industry-standard” chart that automatically fits every brand. ISO 8559-3 provides a methodology for building body-measurement tables and intervals for target populations; it does not turn all markets, products and fit positions into one universal size range. A US regular-fit shirt, a UK slim-fit chino and a stretch knit polo can require different blocks and grade logic even when their labels use familiar letters.
Industry guides such as Techpacker's grading overview are useful for understanding grade rules and graded specs. The factory decision goes one step further: the brand must confirm which rule set applies to this product, market and size range. CAD makes the calculation repeatable. It can also repeat a poor decision at impressive speed.

Lock Fabric, Construction and Wash Conditions
A pattern is approved under conditions. Change those conditions and the same file can produce a different fit.
Fabric stretch and recovery affect widths, openings and support. Relaxation and shrinkage affect length and circumference after cutting, sewing, washing or pressing. A heavier interlining changes collar and placket behavior. A different seam construction can consume a different allowance or restrict movement. Garment dyeing and washing can move measurements after the sample looked correct in an unfinished state.
Before grading, lock or explicitly record:
- fabric composition, construction, weight and approved reference;
- stretch and recovery direction where relevant;
- shrinkage result under the intended care or production wash;
- seam, hem, lining, interlining and reinforcement construction;
- pressing and finishing condition used for measurement; and
- any size-group changes in trims or construction.
If the bulk fabric changes materially from the sample fabric, re-check the base pattern before assuming the approved grade still applies. Freeze the current pattern, graded spec and approved sample references together. If those three disagree, a majority vote is not the release method; the discrepancy must be resolved and the current source identified in writing.

Check a Size Set Before Releasing Bulk Patterns
A base-size sample proves the base size. It does not prove the entire grade.
Plan a size set around risk: normally the smallest and largest planned sizes, plus any size where the rule, trim or construction changes. A wide range may need more checkpoints than a short three-size run. The objective is not to hold a fitting ceremony for every label; it is to test the places where accumulated increments can distort fit or proportion.
For each selected size, check:
- the graded POMs with the same measuring method used for the base sample;
- overall length, width, balance and intended ease;
- armhole and sleeve relationship, collar or neckline behavior and mobility;
- for trousers, rise, seat, thigh, knee and hem transitions;
- pocket, button, artwork and trim placement;
- seam matching, notches and construction feasibility; and
- the defined wash or finishing condition.
Record every correction against the graded pattern and graded spec, then regenerate affected sizes. Do not fix the sewn size-set sample while leaving the source pattern unchanged; the cutting room will follow the file, not the memory of the fitting.
Only after this check should the production patterns move into marker planning and cutting. Cynida typically plans bulk production for 15–30 days after sample approval and material readiness. Pattern and size-set release sit before that window, and the approved files should travel into the sample-to-bulk control plan.

Use a Pattern-and-Grading Handoff Checklist
Before asking a factory to develop or inherit a pattern, put these items in one current handoff:
- Design sketch, technical flats, tech pack or clearly labeled reference garment.
- Target wearer, market, fit direction and any approved brand block or body data.
- Base size, full size range and planned quantity by size if available.
- Base-size garment POMs, tolerances and written measuring methods.
- Notes showing what to copy, change or ignore from each reference.
- Fabric, construction, wash and finishing conditions used for fit approval.
- Current base pattern and file format, if the brand is supplying one.
- Fit-sample comments, approval date and the exact pattern/spec versions they close.
- Grade rules or graded measurements, including any size breaks or fixed components.
- Size-set plan, approval owner and release record before marker making.
Also state what is still open. A brand does not need to arrive with a finished CAD pattern to begin a factory review; a sketch, partial tech pack or reference garment can start feasibility work. Reliable pattern development still requires the open fit, measurement, fabric and construction decisions to be identified and closed before sampling.
